How To Maintain A Higher Fiber Diet Plan

A grocery basket of high-fibre foods including dates

A higher-fibre diet isn't a supplement or a rule, it's a shopping list. Below is what that list actually looks like, split by where in the day the food shows up.

Morning

Rolled oats beat instant oat sachets, since the sachets are mostly sugar with a small amount of oat left in them. Porridge made from the tin or the bag, topped with a few chopped dates instead of honey, gets both the oat fibre and a bit of natural sweetness in one bowl.

Midday

A wrap or a bowl built on brown rice, quinoa or a wholemeal base, with beans, lentils or chickpeas added rather than left out. Most lunch spots will swap white rice for brown if asked, and it's the easiest fibre upgrade available without changing what you're actually eating.

Evening

Keep the skin on potatoes and carrots when they're part of dinner — peeling them throws away a good share of the fibre along with the peel. A side of steamed greens adds more without changing the main dish at all.

Snacking, and where dates fit against other options

Weight for weight, dates carry more fibre than most sweets and biscuits, but they're also dense in natural sugar, so treat a small handful as the serving, not a full box. Next to a biscuit or a chocolate bar they're still the better draw from the pantry when something sweet is wanted, just not something to eat without limit either way.

Buying dates that are actually fresh

Grade and freshness matter more than most people assume — a dried-out, overly hard date has lost some of what made it worth eating in the first place. The Dates Wholesaler Malaysia listing and the Kedai Kurma selection both show current stock by grade, which is worth checking against whatever's sitting in a supermarket bin.
