Junk Food – 5 Healthy And Delicious Substitutes

Petrol station stops on a long drive usually mean the same rack of chips and chocolate bars. Packing a few alternatives before setting off keeps the same convenience without relying on whatever's at the counter.

Dates instead of the chocolate aisle

Dried dates travel well in a car: no melting in a hot glovebox the way chocolate does, and no wrapper crumbs all over the seat. A resealable container in the door pocket lasts the whole trip and gets refilled at any stop that sells fresh produce.

Trail mix instead of a bag of chips

A simple mix of dates, roasted nuts, and a few dried apricots or raisins covers the same craving as a bag of chips, salty and something to keep chewing on for a long stretch of highway, without the deep-fried oil.

Water and date syrup instead of energy drinks

For the driver staying alert on a long stretch, a bottle of water with a spoon of date syrup stirred in gives a natural sugar boost without the caffeine crash that comes an hour after a canned energy drink.

Packing for the whole trip, not just the first leg

Buying a larger box of dates before leaving works out cheaper than restocking snacks at every stop, and a sealed container keeps them fresh for several days on the road, longer than most fresh fruit would last without refrigeration.

The point isn't skipping the petrol station entirely, it's not being stuck with only what's on that shelf when hunger hits three hours into the drive.
