Dates Supplier in Malaysia: Exploring Nutritional Value

Dates Wholesaler Malaysia

Where Malaysia's Iranian dates actually come from

A large share of the imported dates sold in Malaysia trace back to Iran, and the varieties matter more than most buyers realise. Mariami and Piarom are the two that show up most often in Iranian supply chains feeding into Malaysia, prized for a soft, almost fudge-like texture that's noticeably different from the firmer Saudi or Tunisian varieties most shoppers grew up with. Zahedi, a drier and cheaper variety, moves in bulk mainly for cooking and baking rather than eating out of hand.

Getting from Iran to a Malaysian shelf

Iranian dates typically travel by sea freight in refrigerated containers, since the softer varieties in particular don't hold up well to heat over a long transit. That's part of why Mariami and Piarom carry a price premium over drier, more heat-stable varieties — the cold chain isn't optional. A supplier importing these varieties is also managing halal documentation and Malaysian food safety clearance on top of the shipping logistics, all of which shows up in the final price.

Telling the varieties apart

Piarom is darker, almost black-brown, with a wrinkled skin and a dense, chewy bite. Mariami is lighter brown and softer, closer to a caramel in texture. Both are worth trying separately rather than buying whichever is cheaper that week, since the difference in eating experience is bigger than the price difference usually suggests.

Nutritional value worth knowing

Iranian date varieties carry the same core nutritional profile as dates generally — potassium, magnesium, iron, natural fruit sugars, and a solid fibre content per serving — but the softer varieties like Mariami tend to have a slightly higher moisture content, which means a slightly lower calorie density gram for gram than a drier variety like Zahedi. That's a texture and shelf-life difference more than a meaningful nutrition one; none of it should be read as a health claim, just a fact about the fruit.
