A buyer who orders organic dates by the carton is paying for a promise about how the fruit was grown and handled.
That promise is only as good as the certificate behind it.
This guide looks at organic dates wholesale in Malaysia from the buyer side of the deal.
Start with where the dates come from
Malaysia has no commercial date-growing trade so every date on the market here is imported.
That shapes the whole organic question.
Nothing about an organic claim on dates can be checked at a Malaysian farm gate.
It has to be traced back through the importer to a certifier abroad.
Iranian dates make a good example.
Mazafati comes from Bam in Kerman province and is dark and very soft with high moisture. Piarom comes from Hormozgan and has a thin skin, Mariami is a separate Iranian variety that is dark and chewy, and Sayer from Khuzestan is amber-brown and semi-dry.
Whether a given lot of any of these is organic depends on the paperwork for that lot and not on the variety name.
Reading the label tiers
The USDA rules set out four tiers that make a handy model even for stock that never goes near America.
- "100 percent organic" means every ingredient is organic, excluding salt and water.
- "Organic" means at least 95 percent organic ingredients.
- "Made with organic" means at least 70 percent, and the USDA seal is not allowed.
- Below 70 percent the word organic cannot go on the front panel and may only be used on the information panel to mark certified organic ingredients and state their percentage.
Plain whole dates can qualify for the top tier because most raw or minimally processed farm crops can be labelled 100 percent organic.
Date paste and filled dates with added ingredients can land lower so read the front panel carefully.
On EU-labelled stock look for two details printed beside the EU organic logo.
One is the code number of the control body that certified it.
The other states whether the raw materials were farmed in EU or non-EU agriculture.
Organic and health without the hype
Organic dates are often sold on a health promise so it is worth being precise.
A 2012 systematic review in the Annals of Internal Medicine concluded that the published literature lacks strong evidence that organic foods are significantly more nutritious than conventional foods. It added that eating organic food may reduce exposure to pesticide residues.
That is the honest size of the claim.
An organic certificate is a promise about farming rules and not proof of a richer date.

Questions to put to a wholesaler
Who issued the organic certificate and can I see it? A USDA certificate can be checked against the Organic Integrity Database, which lists the certification status of organic farms and businesses.
Does the certificate name this exact product?
Check the product name on it against the one on your invoice.
How are your grades sorted? Grades such as A, AA and Jumbo are each importer's own size sorting, so compare like with like and ask what the grade on this carton means for this supplier.
How will soft dates be kept cold? Mazafati needs refrigeration and is cold-stored so it can be sold year-round, which means the cold chain matters as much as the certificate for that variety.
Timing your order
Demand for dates in Malaysia peaks before and during Ramadan.
Hari Raya and weddings are other busy points.
Middle-East dates are mostly harvested from late summer to autumn and the new-season stock reaches Malaysia some weeks later.
Ask for certificates as soon as new stock is offered.
Choosing a variety for the order
An organic certificate tells you how a lot was grown, but the variety decides how it eats and how it has to be stored. If you are weighing an Iranian date against a Medjool, the post on how Medjool from Palestine compares with Iranian dates in taste and texture sets them side by side.
