Decoding Harga Kurma: A Guide to Understanding Dates Prices

harga kurma

Two boxes of kurma can sit side by side on a shelf with very different price tags. This guide walks through what actually goes into harga kurma in Malaysia, so you can read a price list properly and compare like with like. If you want to see real figures while you read, the Harga Kurma listings at Green Diamond show prices for each variety and pack size.

Start with one fact: every date here is imported

Malaysia has no commercial date-growing trade. Every date sold in the country comes in from abroad, whether it is a gift box of Ajwa or a bag of everyday Khudri. So when you look at dates prices, you are always looking at an imported product, and the first thing worth checking on the label is where it came from.

Variety and origin come first

Start with the variety name on the label. A few of the names you will meet most often:

  • Ajwa, which the market also calls Kurma Nabi, comes from Madinah in Saudi Arabia. It is small, roundish and near-black, with finely wrinkled skin and a soft bite.
  • Medjool originated in Morocco. It is a large, very soft date with a rich caramel taste.
  • Mazafati, often sold as Rotab Mazafati Bam or kurma madu, comes from Bam in Kerman province, Iran.
  • Deglet Noor comes from Tunisia and Algeria. When it is sold on the stem in Malaysia, it is called kurma tangkai.
  • Khudri, from Saudi Arabia, is a brown, semi-dry everyday date.

Because each of these is a different variety, a price comparison across varieties tells you very little. Compare Ajwa with Ajwa, and Medjool with Medjool. For Ajwa bought by the box, this guide to purchasing date fruits focuses on that one variety.

Sayer date Supplier

Sayer, pictured above, is a good example of why the name matters. It comes from Khuzestan in Iran, is amber-brown and semi-dry, and is also traded as Stamaran. It is not the same date as Shahani, which is a separate variety, so two packs with different names should not be priced against each other as if they were one product.

Soft or dry: rutab and tamr

Rutab (or rotab) is the soft, fresh-ripe stage of a date. Tamr (or tamar) is the fully ripe, drier stage. Some varieties are sold both ways. Sukari, a golden-amber date from Al-Qassim, can be bought soft as rutab or in a drier form, and those two packs are different products even though the name on them is the same.

Mazafati sits firmly on the soft side. It is dark, very soft and high in moisture, and it needs refrigeration. It is cold-stored and sold all year, so finding rotab Mazafati outside the harvest months is normal and not a warning sign. There is a separate article on kurma madu.

Grades only mean something inside one seller's range

Labels such as A, AA, AAA or Jumbo are not an international standard. Each importer sorts its own stock by size and uses its own labels. An AA from one supplier and an AA from another are not guaranteed to match, so a grade is useful for comparing packs from the same seller and not much more. Grading is covered separately in date prices and grading systems in Malaysia.

Work out the price per kilo

Pack sizes vary, so check the weight on every pack. Divide the price by the weight in kilograms before you compare anything. A 500g box at half the price of a 1kg box of the same variety and grade costs exactly the same per kilo, so the smaller box is only cheaper in the sense that you are buying less. Gift boxes and trays also carry packaging, which is worth remembering when you set one against a plain bulk pack.

Date-Varieties

Timing your purchase

Demand for dates in Malaysia peaks before and during Ramadan. Hari Raya, wedding hantaran, kenduri and umrah gifts are other peak times through the year. If you need a large quantity for one of these, it makes sense to order well ahead of the busiest weeks. The festive-season demand for dates is covered on its own page.

Gulf and Middle-East dates are mostly harvested from late summer into autumn, roughly August to November, and new-season stock reaches Malaysia some weeks after that. Cold-stored soft dates like Mazafati are on sale outside that window too.

Putting it together

Read the variety and origin first, check whether the date is soft rutab or drier tamr, compare grades only within one seller, and turn every price into a price per kilo. Done in that order, a long price list becomes much easier to make sense of, whether you are buying a single box or stocking up for your desired date fruit products in bulk.
