Kedai Kurma: Saving Time and Money through Online Shopping

Kedai Kurma

Iranian dates are a good test of whether buying online really saves time and money, because the two best-known Iranian dates in Malaysian shops are stored so differently. Mariami is a reddish-brown date with finely wrinkled skin and soft flesh, and it keeps in a closed container in a cool, dry place. Rotab Mazafati from Bam is a fresh date that has to go in the fridge, or the freezer if you want it to last longer. Which one you buy changes how much you should order at once and how you compare prices. If you would rather see the fruit before you pay, a Kedai Kurma with a walk-in counter is still a fair choice. This piece is for buyers who want to order from home and get it right.

Where the time goes when you buy in person

Paying takes a minute. The travel, the parking and finding out at the counter that your grade has sold out take much longer. Online, the stock status sits on the listing. When we checked Green Diamond's range in October 2026, the 1kg Mariami AAA and three 5kg Mariami grades were in stock and the Rotab Mazafati carton was marked out of stock. You find that out in a minute rather than on a wasted drive.

Repeat orders are where the bigger saving is. The first order is slow because you are still working out what the grade letters mean, and our guide to date grading in Malaysia covers that part. After you know which grade suits your household, reordering takes a couple of minutes.

Working out the real price per kilo

A listed price only becomes useful once you turn it into a price per kilo at the same grade. Here are Green Diamond's Mariami prices from October 2026:

  • 1kg Mariami AAA: RM40, so RM40 a kilo
  • Mariami AAA VIP, 5kg: RM148, about RM29.60 a kilo
  • Mariami AA, 5kg: RM129, about RM25.80 a kilo
  • Mariami A, 5kg: RM75, which is RM15 a kilo

Two things stand out. Buying the top grade as a 5kg box costs about a quarter less per kilo than buying a single kilo. And the grades are far apart: grade A is roughly half the per-kilo price of AAA VIP. If the dates are going into bubur or a kuih filling, the lower grade is where most of the saving is, and our post on cooking with Mariami has ideas for that kind of use. Keep the higher grade for eating whole or for guests, where looks count.

Add the delivery charge to the basket before you compare sellers, then divide by the kilos. A cheap box with a high shipping line can cost more per kilo than a dearer box with free delivery.

When buying more stops saving money

A big box only saves money if you finish it in good condition, and this is where the two Iranian dates part ways. Mariami can sit in a sealed container in the kitchen, with the fridge as an option for keeping it longer, so a 5kg box is realistic for a family that eats dates most days or is stocking up for puasa. Rotab Mazafati needs chilling from the start. Before you order a full carton of it, check that you have the fridge space. A bulk discount on a fresh date you cannot keep cold is not a saving.

Checks that save you a second order

The most expensive online mistake is getting the wrong thing and ordering again. A few minutes on the listing avoids most of it:

  • The variety is named. "Iranian dates" on its own could mean Mariami, Mazafati, Piarom or Sayer, and they are not priced the same.
  • The grade and net weight are both stated, so the per-kilo sum works.
  • For Rotab Mazafati, the listing says it is kept chilled.
  • The season is shown. Green Diamond puts it in the product name, as in "Mariami AA 2026".

If you are seeking high-quality dates in Malaysia in larger volumes for a stall or a business, our wholesale price guide goes further than a household budget does. And shops that offer a diverse range of date varieties make it easy to add a 1kg pack of something new to your usual order and pay a single delivery charge.

The short answer for Iranian dates

Online buying saves time once you know your grade. It saves money when you compare per kilo, match the grade to how the dates will be used, and only buy in bulk what you can store. The channel does not make dates cheaper on its own. Doing the sums does.
