The Prized Delight: Exploring Kurma Mabroom in Malaysia

Buah kurma

Most of what this site covers comes from Iran: Mazafati from Bam, Mariami, Piarom, Sayer. Kurma Mabroom is the exception worth knowing. It is a Saudi date from the Madinah region, and in Malaysian shops it often sits on the same shelf as the Iranian semi-dry varieties. If you already buy Mariami or Sayer, Mabroom is the obvious next one to try, and this page explains where it fits. To see it as a retail product, the Kurma Mabroom Malaysia listing is a good place to start.

What Mabroom looks like

Mabroom is long and slender, clearly thinner than most dates in a mixed box. The skin is reddish-brown rather than black. It is a semi-dry date, so it holds its shape when you pick it up and gives a chewy bite instead of melting the way a soft rotab does.

That description is not a test for whether a box is genuine. Colour shifts from batch to batch. The only reliable guide to what you are buying is the label: the variety, the country of origin and the importer's name.

Mabroom next to the Iranian dates you may already know

Malaysia has no commercial date farms, so every date in a local shop is imported, and Saudi and Iranian stock end up side by side. A rough comparison helps when you are choosing between them:

  • Mariami, from Iran, is dark, semi-dry and chewy. It is the nearest match to Mabroom in bite, though darker in colour.
  • Piarom, from Hormozgan in Iran, is also dark and semi-dry, with a thin skin.
  • Sayer, from Khuzestan and also traded as Stamaran, is amber-brown and semi-dry. Plenty of families treat it as the everyday date.
  • Mazafati from Bam, in Kerman province, is another kind of date altogether. It is dark, very soft and moist, and it needs the fridge.

So if someone at home likes Mariami because it is chewy and not sticky, Mabroom is a fair bet. If they prefer the soft, almost jammy Mazafati, Mabroom will feel firm by comparison. Our post on how taste and texture vary between date varieties goes further into this.

Storing a semi-dry date

Semi-dry dates are easier to keep than soft ones. An opened pack of Mabroom is fine in an airtight container in a cool cupboard, away from the stove and the sunny window. In a hot kitchen, or if you bought a whole carton, the fridge is safer. Take the dates out a few minutes before serving and they soften a little.

Mazafati is the opposite case and should go straight into the fridge. Cold-stored rotab is sold all year, so seeing it outside the harvest months is normal. The difference between the soft rutab stage and the drier tamr stage is covered in our piece on fresh vs dried dates.

Buying Mabroom in Malaysia

Demand climbs in the weeks before and during Ramadan, then again for Hari Raya open houses, weddings (dates often go into the hantaran), kenduri and umrah gifts. Stock gets tight in those weeks. If you need several kilos, order early.

Grades such as A, AA or Jumbo are each importer's own size sorting, not an international standard, so a Jumbo from one supplier is not the same as a Jumbo from another. Compare offers by net weight and price per kilo, and ask for the variety and country of origin in writing. For Mabroom the label should say Saudi Arabia. Our guide to date prices and grading systems in Malaysia shows how sellers usually lay this out.

Putting it on the open-house table

Mabroom earns its spot on a mixed plate because it looks different from everything else there. Its length and reddish skin stand out beside round, near-black dates. If you would rather not arrange a plate yourself, you can find beautifully arranged platters of dates online and have them delivered before guests arrive. Ask what varieties are in the platter before you order, since "assorted" can mean anything.

Try a small pack first

If you have never had Mabroom, buy a small pack before committing to a carton. Eat a few on their own, then put them beside the Iranian date you normally buy and taste them one after the other. Ten minutes of that tells you more than any write-up, this one included.
